Vitamin D — Home Test Kit

What is being tested?

Whether supplemented or manufactured in the skin, cholecalciferol (D3) is hydroxylated in the liver to form 25-hydroxycholcalciferol (25(OH)D3) and this is the major circulating form of the vitamin. The 25(OH)D3 form is considered the most accurate measure of the amount of vitamin D in the body.

Blood Drop vs. Blood Spot Testing

The difference is in the patented collection device. This advanced collection technology uses special serum-separating paper that immediately separates the red cells from the serum when the drop hits the collection device, providing an unadulterated sample for accurate vitamin D testing. When compared directly to venipuncture (blood draw) samples, our test performed accurately and precisely (r value of 0.96).

We’re very pleased to release this new home test kit for vitamin D. Blood Drop testing provides “numbers you can count on.”

The kit includes all collection materials and the means to ship the specimen to the lab free of charge. Results are provided within 10 - 14 days from the time the test was received at the lab.

Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a well-absorbed fat-soluble vitamin. Some foods, like those in the milk and dairy groups, are fortified, but most Americans still tend to have low levels of this critical vitamin. Vitamin D can be synthesized in the body from sunlight, but the sun is not a reliable source of vitamin D, particularly for those living in the Northern hemisphere or those who use sun-block on a regular basis.

Vitamin D:
  • Manages critical mineral balance in the blood and bones
  • Improves absorption of calcium
  • Promotes strong, dense bones
  • Improves muscle strength and neuromuscular function
  • Provides important immune and autoimmune support
  • Nourishes gums and teeth
  • Supports arterial health
  • Improves joints and range-of-motion
  • Promotes lung function
  • Supports colon, breast and prostate health
  • May improve cognition

Who needs vitamin D?

Experts report that adults, seniors and people-of-color have the lowest levels. Obese individuals and people with malabsorption and intestinal issues tend to be low. New findings indicate that pregnant women, young adults, teens and children have low levels of vitamin D. Why? Primarily because new research reports greater need and importance and most people avoid direct sun exposure.
