Omega-3 Fatty Acids Support a Balanced Mood

In a recent double-blind, randomized controlled trial, researchers determined that omega-3 fatty acids support a healthy mood in older adults. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are important for optimal inflammatory processes, immune function, cognition and cardiovascular health.

Fifty subjects age 65 and older with mild cognitive changes were included in the study. The subjects were given a DHA-rich supplement of 1.55 grams DHA plus 0.40 grams EPA daily, or an EPA-rich supplement with 1.67g EPA and 0.16g of DHA, or the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid at a dose of 2.2 grams daily. At the beginning of the study and after 6 months of supplementation, the subjects were assessed for fatty acid composition of red blood cells, cognition, mood and quality of life.

The study showed that compared to the group receiving the omega-6 supplement of linoleic acid, both groups receiving EPA and DHA had brighter moods. In addition, the group receiving the DHA-rich supplement had improved performance on measurements of verbal fluency. The subjects in the DHA-group also reported enhanced physical health. No other changes in cognition or quality of life were noted.

The researchers concluded that increased intakes of DHA and EPA benefited mental health in older people with mild cognitive changes and may support mood health in these individuals.
