AGEBlock Usage Question

Dear Dr. Dean

The item description for AGEBlock both in the VRP catalog and on the bottle does not indicate whether to take this supplement with meals or on an empty stomach.

From past usage I recognize that one of the ingredients to AGEBlock Carnosine should be taken on an empty stomach. Does the same hold true for AGEBlock?

Thanks

Aging

Dear Dr. Dean

I have read the generalized information about aging and the recommendations which are not too specific about antioxidants etc. I would like a specific regimen for a 78-year-old male who eats a balanced Ayurvedic diet is in general good health except for atrial fibrillation (2 mg/day Coumadin). Although I have BPH it is not a problem as long as I eat properly. I have no limit on the number of capsules I can take daily but am concerned with cost.

My understanding of the general recommendations:

* Extend Core 2 caps
* Essential Minerals 3 caps
* Phytonutrients ???
* Antioxidants ???
* Hormones ???
* Hypothalamic Sensitizers ???
* Cellular Bioenergetics ???

Amino Acid Timing

Dear Dr. Dean

I am having difficulty with the amino acid supplements. It is my understanding that they must be taken on an empty stomach and separate from each other. So on an empty stomach I take L- Proline and 1 hour later I
take N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine . I also take L-Carnitine Taurine Glutamine Carnosine Arginine and L-Tyrosine and at bed time I take 5-HTP and
Melatonin together. This is a very difficult schedule to maintain. Are any of these supplements that I can take at the same time and still have them be effective?

BHT -- Current Thoughts

Dear Dr. Dean

Is there anything new with regard to BHT addition to cooking oils for peroxidation protection? I have heard off and on over the years that BHT may act as a carcinogen under some conditions? If so what are those conditions?

We have been adding it to our polysaturated fat cooking oils -- but I wonder if this is the right thing to do now? We do take a reasonable amount of antioxidants on a daily basis.

What are your thoughts?

Carbohydrate and Caloric Restriction as Anti-Aging Approaches

Dear Dr. Dean:

I just saw the following new study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12969875&dopt=Abstract. Doesn't this suggest that the benefits of calorie restriction may predominantly result from reduced insulin levels and that, accordingly, a diet such as Atkins, which reduces insulin levels by controlling carbohydrate consumption, seems a clear best dietary option?

Carnosine and AGEBlock

Dear Dr. Dean:

I recently listened to the talk on carnosine given at the 2001 Anti-aging Conference. It renewed my interest in this product as a supplement to goats rue the anti-crosslinking substance in your GluControl and AGEBlock products. It sounds like carnosine could reverse crosslinking while goats rue primarily prevents new crosslinking. I remember reading one of your answers to a Dear Dr. question where you were not in favor of carnosine supplementation. I cant find this response (there is no category for carnosine itself so Im not sure what topic I was looking at when I saw it). It seemed you had some reservations but I dont remember the details. Can you clear this up for me?

Carnosine as a Cause of Lipofuscin Formation?

Dear Dr. Dean:

I ordered the 2001 Monaco anti-aging series and want to take carnosine.

I am concerned about the possibility of this product causing lipofuscin as mentioned on the Internet. The internet says to take Acetyl N-carnitine (too expensive) or DMAE.

VRPs DMAE has riboflavin in it which is in my multivitamin at high enough amounts so I could try your powder form.

My further concerns are that DMAE has a lot of possible side-effects so I would like to take the smallest functional dose. Also DMAE promotes
the formation of acetylcholine which Dr. M. Rossellini says is one of the immuno-stimulants which would not be good for my osteoporosis.

I woke up one morning in Hawaii 15 years ago with my arms covered in big brown blotches so I dont want any more. Ive ordered and received the carnosine from VRP and am just waiting for answers to my concerns before I start this program. Thank you for any help. I enjoy the VRP newsletter.

Cognitive Enhancement Suggestions

Dear Dr. Dean:

I am a 75-year old male. I have been taking supplements for thirty years and have been a customer of VRP for over fifteen years. I have been jogging about four days per week and meditating daily. I have recommended your organization with pleasure to friends around the country. I am a high-tech entrepreneur and have a reasonably demanding business life with significant stress. In general I believe my health is very good. But now I am noticing a problem which brings me to ask your help.

My short-term memory is declining noticeably. For example if I try to remember all the details of a complicated conversation I had yesterday I find it harder to bring those back. Also if I need to make a decision which involves balancing a variety of factors I find it takes me significantly longer than it used to. I think this may just be a normal aging process. But I would very much appreciate your giving me a recommendation either of particular supplements to take to counteract or reverse this and/or a book or other publication which may cover reasonably current thoughts on this same subject. This might include but not be limited to things available from VRP or IAS.

Thank you very much for yor help in this matter.

Cross-Link Inhibitor Confusion

Dear Dr. Dean:

Re-studying your November 2004 piece about AGE's and cross-linking, I could not determine what combination of aminoguanidine, goat's rue extract, P5P, benfotiamine should apply.  When the VRP new catalog came I thought I would find the answer.  I see two products, AGEBlock™ and benfotiamine.

The catalog doesn't say which is best, if both are needed, if the other items on page 30 should be added. Can you help?  Should Metformin also be considered?

In addition, I'm told that taking Lithium Orotate lowers thyroid function.  Might two Lithium Orotate capsules per day require an adjustment, such as beginning thyroid supplementation or increasing the dose of thyroid supplementation used?

Dr Benjamin Frank

Dear Dr Dean

Thank you for bringing Dr Franks wonderful work with RNA back to attention. I still have his books (the 2nd one is a cookbook) that I purchased in the 70s and wouldnt part with them.

Im writing because you mention his untimely death at the age of 57 as being due to his diabetes. Ive long been under the impression that his death was actually due to being struck by a car while walking across the street in downtown Manhattan.

Id swear I remember reading this in the popular health magazines of the 70s/80s such as Prevention or perhaps Lets Live.

If this is correct it would be a shame for people to believe that it was the diabetes that killed him. Is there any way of verifying the cause of his death?

EnteraKlenz Dosage

Dear VRP

I am a 52-year-old white male (6 1 185 lbs 15% body fat). My health is excellent and I workout 3 days a week at the gym for 2 1/2 hours each day with 40 minutes of stretching at home before the gym. Also I exercise at home on a stationary bike with no resistance 25 minutes per day 3 days a week with 20 minutes of stretching each (at home) day.

I live in the most polluted part of Los Angeles county; the San Gabriel Valley. I use hepa air purifiers 1/2 per day at home and an air purifier on low in my bedroom while I sleep (with the window opened 1 1/2 inches at
night).

My question is: How do I use EnteraKlenz if I have never detoxified in my life and am doing it for life-extension purposes? The instructions are unclear to me and I may need more than the recommended doses for how big I am physically. The serving size on the label is 16 grams - yet the recommended dose is 10 grams. Which dose do I take?

Customer Service said to take it 2-3 times per week for one month; than once a month for the rest of my life. For my once a month maintenance dose is that once a day for two consecutive days each month for life extension or is it once per day each month?

Also can I continue to refrigerate EnteraKlenz after opening it? Please be precise and detailed in your instructions. Thank you for your help.

Gerovital & Centrophenoxine

Dear Dr Dean,

I am writing to you having been recommended to do so by Dr Ralph Cinque, who thinks you may be more qualified to answer a question I put to him regarding Gerovital H3 and Centrophenoxine.

I have been taking Gerovital H3 for a while with excellent results, and have recently heard about Centrophenoxine as an anti-aging substance. I know that GH3 breaks down in the body into two substances (PABA and DEAE) and that the main byproduct of Centrophenoxine is DMAE, which apparently is very similar to DEAE. The question I put to Dr Cinque was whether there was
any point in taking GH3 and Centrophenoxine together for this reason, and whether there might be any sort of negative reaction to doing so: e.g too much acetylcholine release.

I would not give up GH3 but wondered what, if any, the differences were between DEAE and DMAE and whether Centrophenoxine would be a useful (or useless) addition. I would be very grateful
for any comments that you might have.

Mr. W

Hormonal Imbalances

Dear Dr. Dean:

In your May newsletter you made mention of the need for hormone testing and the taking of supplemental hormones if needed.

Normally of approximately 70 hormones in the body only about seven hormones are tested and supplements provided if needed.

My question is: are hormones similar to B vitamins in that supplementing some may cause a shortage or imbalance of others? In other words if I have a low level of two or three hormones and start taking supplements for these two or three hormones will it cause a shortage or imbalance in the remaining hormones?

Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen

I recently heard an advertisment for a product called hyaluronic acid (HA). Thus in theory many degenerative diseases can be prevented or at least delayed. Do you manufacture such a product or something equivalent? As a result of my own research I believe that restoring and maintaining the bodys collagen is a very important factor in preventing or minimizing certain diseases. What would you recommend to maintain the bodys collagen? Thanks.

Metformin and Aging

Dear Dr. Dean:

I am a physician now 73 years old. Over the years I have become increasingly interested in antioxidants and related subjects. As a lifelong skeptic I question many of the claims made. Almost two years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and metformin was prescribed. I had suffered from hypertension since 1979 which was controlled on ACE inhibitors.

Since I started metformin I note what appear to be significant changes in certain external indices of aging. I am not sure if some of those effects may have been due to weight loss--from 150 at 510 to my present 130 or so. In any case the jowls that were beginning to become noticeable have almost completely receded. There were numerous bumps under the skin in my temporal areas--they have almost completely disappeared. My vision which was blurred--probably because of the high blood sugar--has become much sharper. My blood pressure is now so low (frequently a systolic of 80) that I reduced my Cozaar--the latest medicine-- to 25 mg./ day which still maintains low pressures. This could be due to the decrease in insulin resistance secondary to lowered blood sugars.

I am trying to gain some perspective on how much of this effect might reasonably be attributed to metformin. I am now the chief psychiatrist of a large state prison system. Information about aging and maintaing health would be relevant to the operation of an increasingly-expensive court-mandated health program. I have not seen much on the Internet other than your articles on metformin and aging with an appropriate research design. I know that this medication has been in use for decades even though it was only approved in the U.S. about a decade ago. Do you have any additional references concerning the effects of metformin on aging which are supported by research-backed statistics? One has to always be mindful of the extremely important placebo effect. (This effect is particularly important in psychiatry where the costs of the newer psychotropic medications are extremely high.)

I would appreciate any information that you can send. Thank you advance.

Metformin and Caloric Restriction

Dear Dr. Dean:

I take 1 g of Metformin daily in divided doses. I also practice calorie restriction and have a BMI of 18-18.5. My fasting insulin and HgA1C are well below the reference limits. My serum B12 AST ALT and Bilirubin levels are normal. My homocysteine level is borderline normal. In a recent discussion in the sci-life extension forum Dr Steve Harris thought that I was foolish to take Metformin. He wrote They wont tell you that youre close to main type of metformin toxicity which is lactic acidosis. Metformin itself isnt liver-metabolized (though lactate is) so the main thing that triggers Metformin build-up is reduced renal clearance. That can happen on a day you get dehydrated take an NSAID exercise especially hard get infected-- who knows? The other end of the coin is how much stress youre putting on your lactate production and clearance systems which involve your skeletal muscles and your liver and your cardiac and even pulmonary function. As for your renal function it even falls with aging and how close you are to the edge of starting to develop lactic acidois when youre on Metformin is something for which theres no medical test. You get your creatinine levels checked regularly you stay on the lower dose range of the drug cross your fingers and hope. Kind of dumb if youre not treating diabetes. http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=e2d5728e60ae672c

What do you think? Am I foolish to take Metformin and practice calorie restriction?

Metformin Safety

About METFORMIN -- Ive read your Neuroendocrine series of articles and even ordered some Metformin from IAS. But I havent tried it yet because Im scared about SERIOUS side effects (though rare). Q1: Is there any way one can ease into Metformin and get any warning signs if lactic acidosis starts building up -- then discontinue usage before having to go to an emergency room? Q2: Can you comment on or give examples of just what kind of or degree of problem involving liver / kidneys would contraindicate Metformin usage (in perhaps an otherwise healthy individual)? Although made by another company I have been using 200 mg 20- hydroecdysterone 3x daily past 2 months with notable results. Possible suggested alternative to Metformin? Many thanks. MSM, Sulfur & Balance Problems

Dear Dr. Dean

When I was in Mexico years ago I met the late Dr Carl Pilsner (see enclosed literature). I bought some bottles of Minasul from him. I found that I really loved the taste of the sulfur water. When I tried to contact Dr. Pilsner his wife MaryAnne told me that he had died recently. So I never found anyone to answer my questions. I really wanted to find out how healthful it was to drink Minasul and how much he would recommend a day. I am not a water person I dont even drink with meals and this would be a way for me to enjoy drinking glasses of water.

So I wonder if you would be so kind as to give me your opinion if you think Minasul is as healthy as MSM and how many drops per glass and glasses per day you would recommend.

I am 82 years old and I am in very good health. I ski (downhill) in the winter and usually bicycle in Europe Speedhosted in the summer. I attribute my good health to the fact that I eat organically as much as possible and have been drinking raw milk for 40 years. I am not a vegetarian.

I am watching Vitamin Research News very carefully for suggestions.

I had a bone density test in August 2001. It showed slight signs of osteoporosis. In the past 3 months I have been very unsteady on uneven ground and now for the first time I reach for the bannisters on stairs. I have begun to notice that most older people tend to have this problem much earlier than I sometimes in their late 60s.

Neuroendocrine Theory

Dr. Dean:

I read with interest your Part I of the Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging in the VRP News. I have read a bit about it before but have not studied it extensively. However I should point out that while it perhaps offers the key to the process of maturation it does not fully explain the deterioration present in aging. As human beings we tend to simplify things which are not so simple and I think this is one instance of that. So we should be sensitive to where other explanations fit better.

For example aging deterioration in the bodys glucose transport system seems to follow a different model. Here the evidence seems pretty clear although I know of no single fully controlled study which proves what I am going to say here.

In brief insulin is required to transport glucose across the cell barrier. However the more insulin is present in the bloodstream over time the more its effectiveness in transporting glucose across the cell barrier declines.

Longevity appears to generally be associated with those who minimize their use of insulin. This has been well demonstrated in controlled experiments with lab animals. Those who overuse their insulin (through frequent eating of high carbohydrate foods which stimulate insulin production) develop obesity and type II diabetes. Furthermore type II diabetes is characterized by the cells developing a resistance to insulin so ever-increasing amounts of it are created by the body in a losing battle to have it do its job.

Thus while insulin indeed exists to perform a specific task the more it is called upon to do this task the more it loses the ability to do it in the future. This decline appears basically to be follow a simple paradigm the more you use it the more you lose it.

In a related manner as Dr. Edward Howell pointed out in his studies of the role of digestive enzymes in the 1940s and 1980s the pancreas appears to have a finite capability of enzyme production. After it has used up its production potential then it fails. This is also similar to the heart where again lab studies of animals have shown that animals with slower heart beats live longer than those with faster ones.

In short these illustrate a different model of deterioration in which there is a finite amount of capacity available. Deterioration is defined as usage of this capability over time and longevity depends on using it up slowly. This model complements the Neuroendocrine Theory and certainly in no way competes against it.

Sincerely

Robert

Questions Regarding Potential Anti Aging Effects of DMAE

Dear Dr. Dean,

In response to the recent article regarding DMAE, I'd like to share my experience.

I began supplementing with DMAE after reading previous VRP articles.  However, I now notice a surface film on my urine that occurs only after taking DMAE.  I no longer supplement with DMAE.

Subsequently, I found research indicating that DMAE significantly inhibits betaine production in the kidney, and suggesting that betaine is an important regulatory kidney solute (see this link: http://physrev.physiology.org/cgi/content/abstract/78/1/247).  As you know, betaine also facilitates homocysteine metabolism, liver functioning, and so on.

This study presumably suggests that DMAE reduces the lifespan of quail:  J Gerontol. 1977 Jan;32(1):38-45. Effects of dimethylaminoethanol upon life-span and behavior of aged Japanese quail. Cherkin A, Exkardt MJ.

Furthermore, this study presumably suggests that DMAE is associated with a mild increase in blood pressure:  Fisman M, Mersky H, Helmes E. Double-blind trial of 2-dimethylaminoethanol in Alzheimer's disease. Am J Psychiatry. Jul1981;138(7):970-2.

Are these causes for concern unfounded?

Thanks,

Why not recommend a proportionate dosage for humans like 88 grams daily? How did VRP arrive at the recommended dosage? Is there some rational approximation of an appropriate dose? Based on what data?

Thanks

Craig Castanet D.C.

Scientist Panel's View of Anti-Aging

Dear Dr. Dean:

The May 13 2002 issue of Scientific American cites a panel of 51 aging researchers who pan antioxidants and hormones. Obviously you disagree.

In terms a layman can understand what is the clear and compelling basis for disagreeing with their article? (I am aware that thousands of studies support supplementation. The article claims these have been misunderstood or misrepresented.)

Also if in your view the panel is misrepresenting the evidence your speculations as to why would be welcome.

Thanks.

Selegeline

Dr. Dean:

I have not seen any references to the use of Eldepryl (Selegiline) in your Vitamin Research News for quite a while now. Do you still feel as positive about its use as you did back in 1997? Thank you.

The Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging

Dear Dr. Dean,

I'm a nurse writing up a research study. And after reading several articles of yours, and others that reference "The Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging," I would like to reference this book as well. I had fully intended to purchase this text, but it appears to be out of print.

One author, (Sandlow) published in the newsletter of the American Academy of Pain Management, makes the following comment:

"Dilman and Dean (1992), who are responsible for the neuroendocrine theory of aging, refer to this as adrenal maladaptation or hyperadaptosis. Hyperadaptosis is considered by some to be a precursor to Cushing's syndrome, and is characterized by prolonged exposure to excess cortisol levels and is caused by the loss of hypothalamic sensitivity to the inhibitory effect of cortisol. (Dilman, 1981)."

It is unclear to me if the comment regarding hyperadaptosis-as-a-precursor-to-Cushing's is attributed to your text, or to Dilman's work: The Law of Deviation of Homeostasis in Diseases of Aging (1981).

I am wondering if you are able to clarify the source of this statement as I would very much like to reference the source. If it is from your work, I'm wondering if you would be willing to look up the page number of this comment. (The journal to which I wish to submit requires page numbers.)

I'm thinking a peek in the index, under Cushing's syndrome or adrenal/pituitary tumor, might locate a page number? Or perhaps the comment is located in a section discussing adrenal exhaustion?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration, Dr. Dean. I realize that this is a completely presumptuous request, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ms. L RN

Dear Dr. Dean

First why do you not sell TMG and what are your views on this product?

Also why do you only make 50 mg capsules of carnosine?

Please keep up your great work.

Thanks

Xylitol and AGEs

Dear Dr. Dean

I read with interest in your VR news regarding glycation + glycosylation occuring when a sugar reacts with a primary amino group; and how the process progresses to form AGES.

Does this process occur when ingesting any carbohydrate such as bread pasta rice etc.? Also finally and most important does this process occur
with Xylitol crystals?

Yours Truly
F. Capps
