DMSA, or dimercaptosuccinic acid, is an organosulfur compound: an organic compound that contains sulfur. Sulfur is essential to life and is plentiful in nature; it even appears in two of the 20 common amino acids. DMSA occurs in two forms, one of which - meso 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid - binds to certain metals. The meso isomer is used as a chelating agent to mobilize metal ions, followed by excretion from the body.
DMSA is water-soluble and non-toxic. It has been used orally since the 1950s. Research has demonstrated DMSA’s safety and efficacy, and science supports its use. It has been shown to bind to mercury, as well as arsenic and lead.
DMSA is quite safe and usually has few side effects, especially when used under the guidance of a physician trained in chelation therapy. The use of a more moderate dosage over a longer period of time may enhance safety and efficacy.
DMSA can remove other nutrients, so it is important to take a quality multi-vitamin to ensure your body has adequate supplies of these nutrients. DMSA can also cause deficiencies of copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc; supplementation will help counteract the removal of these minerals. DMSA doesn’t directly bind to magnesium, cysteine, or glutathione, but detoxification can result in depletion of these nutrients, as well.
As always, consult with your medical practitioner before beginning or stopping any supplement regimen, especially during detoxification and chelation.
DMSA should be taken under the supervision of a physician trained in chelation therapy.
