Dear Doctor Q & A

Seri-Phos

Question:

Dear Dr. Dean: In regards to your product SeriPhos. It was prescribed to me years ago by a natural MD as a memory aid. I took it religiously and achieved the desired effect well beyond my expectations. In some research I did on PS I read at Durk & Sandys site that PS can be used in cycles for example two months on and one month off. So to save money I did this and it worked well. I experimented by not taking it for longer periods and found my memory losing its spark. All was well until I spoke to Steve at Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy asking why he didnt stock such an incredible miracle supplement. He told me he couldnt get an assay from the company and did not stock anything without knowing the exact ingredients. I contacted the company and was referred to their medical advisor. We exchanged a number of emails and spoke on the phone as well. He said there was a secret ingredient that he was not allowed to divulge. I was concerned about having taken it for several years on a regular basis and told him so. When he found out Id been taking SeriPhos continually for four years cycling it he told me to stop right away that I could harm my adrenal function by taking it for such a long period of time. Im a nutritionist and have placed some of my clients on this supplement and was naturally concerned upon hearing this. He said it is only advisable to use SeriPhos for limited periods of time no more than two to three months! I stopped taking it right away and in the next several weeks had a noticable loss of energy and mental clarity. It took me several months to build my energy back up and find other ways to address the mental clarity issue. Dr. Dean you were my doctor back in the 80s in Los Angeles and truly changed my life through your treatment and inspired me through your knowledge to apply your teachings to myself and others. I truly want to know why you do not issue a warning or recommend proper usage of SeriPhos as my experience with the supplement and the company has shown there is a risk. And what is that secret ingredient and why can using it for extended periods harm the adrenals? Thanks so much. Melissa

Answer:

Dear Melissa Good to hear from you again. SeriPhos is an economical way to obtain the benefits of phosphatidylserine. I dont know of any secret ingredient in the product or any reason why it should not be taken on a continuous basis. Its action I believe is to act as a cortisol receptor sensitizer like Phosphatidylserine. In that regard it improves adrenal function and the bodys response to its own cortisol. However it does not raise cortisol levels nor does it cause adrenal suppression as long term cortisol use would do. I will look further into this to confirm my understanding of the ingredients and mechanism of action. In the meantime I believe you can safely and beneficially continue to take SeriPhos as you had been doing. I will get back to you with the results of our inquiries. Ward Dean M.D.
