QuerCelain and Histamine

Dear Dr. Meletis,

I am taking QuerCelain® for allergy relief but notice it inhibits histamine release. I am also taking Extend Plus, which contains Niacin that releases histamine and causes capillary dilation, which is good for my heart. I also massage my head vigorously to create histamine release to prevent hair loss. My question, by taking QuerCelain is there a conflict with Niacin and the massage used for histamine release?

Mr. T.

Dear Mr. T.,

There should be no problem with your current routine. Your are correct the proposed mechanism with quercetin, found in QuerCelain, is supposed to stabilize mast cells from the release of histamine. The Extend Plus contains two forms of niacin, neither of which are histamine releasing. Inositol hexanicotinate is actually called flush free, and the niacinamide is not known for the flushing effect. Even without the flush, they are therapeutic. The vigorous massage of the scalp works on many mechanisms including vasodilation, so this should not be affected by quercetin. You may also want to read about Healthy Hair Caps as well, relative to sustaining healthy hair.
Thank you for the question.

Sincerely,

Chris D. Meletis, ND
