Osteoporosis in 42-Year-Old

Dear Dr. Meletis,

I’m 42 years old, just had my third baby, but in a very difficult situation.

Two months after giving birth I started to have terrible back pain; it was almost unbearable after awhile. It turned out I have severe osteoporosis and had 6 vertebraes fractured. I have been on heparin injections prior to giving birth and on acenocoumarol (which is like coumadin) since 2005. I have Factor V Leiden mutation. I’d like to get off my blood thinner so that my bones can get better. What do you suggest as anticoagulation and for the osteoporosis? I need help. Thank you very much for your knowledge!

Ms. C.

Dear Ms. C.,

It sounds like your case is complex. The blood-thinning recommendations would have to be discussed with your doctor; you may discuss with your doctor Nattokinase along with Vitamin E and large doses of fish oil (Ethyl EPA).

In terms of the osteoporosis, getting your vitamin D levels measured is important. With 3 children, your vitamin D levels could have become lowered via the pregnancy process. There is a strong correlation with low vitamin D and osteoporosis.

There is no question that Coumadin® and similar drugs that interfere with Vitamin K can contribute to osteoporosis and we are all too familiar with the conflict between Vitamin K and Coumadin. Some doctors are now allowing their patients to slowly increase their Vitamin K intake and adjust the Coumadin levels. Working closely with your personal physician is essential.

Sincerely,

Chris D. Meletis, ND
