Dear Dr. Dean,My partner has AIDS and has been taking Advanced Essential Minerals, Extend Plus Capsules, and Selenium. His liver enzymes came back elevated, though I don’t have the exact levels. His physician suggested he stop taking both the vitamins and the minerals as she felt this might be damaging his liver. Seems odd to me. Could he be over working his liver with these products? Any further advise would be very appreciated.Mr. K.
Dear Mr. K.,I don’t know of any reason that the products you mentioned would be elevating your partner’s liver enzymes. In fact, one study showed that multivitamins increased immune health in individuals with HIV (see the articles, "Multivitamins Improve Immune Health in Individuals with HIV," "Selenium & HIV Infection" and "Multivitamins May Slow Progression of HIV in Pregnant Women" all available on our website). I believe the disease is the more likely cause. I suggest adding HepatoGen™ to his regimen. Alternatively, he could discontinue the supplements and re-test the liver after about a month or so to see if there is any improvement.Ward Dean, MD
