Dear Dr. Meletis, What do you suggest for irritability? I feel like I have horrible PMS that never goes away. Also, my 7-year-old son is on Concerta® for ADHD. It helps with his focus issues, but I don’t like the side effects. He’s very grouchy all of the time and has a lot of anxiety. What can I do to help him? I’d like something natural that also helps his focus issues as well as the Concerta. Is there something like that? Thanks! Ms. B.
Dear Ms. B., Stress can certainly contribute to irritability. So can sleep deprivation. This can take the form of snoring at night or sleep apnea, and both adults and children can suffer from sleep disturbances that alter brain function and quality of life. It is estimated that 25 percent of children labeled ADD/ADHD are either dehydrated or have a sleep disorder. Use of Zinc and DHA is absolutely essential for children with ADD/ADHD. Also taking a Food Allergy Test for 96 of the most common food sensitivities is critical. VRP offers this test directly to consumers, and it is the same test that I have used for 15 years in clinical practice. For female irritability the Zinc and DHA/EPA can help. Also use of HerBalance™ Cream, days 16 to 28 of the menstrual cycle. That is assuming you are not taking birth control pills. Of course visit with your GYN about the hormonal well being. Also HerBalance™ I is designed for PMS symptoms. We would be interested in hearing how your son and you are doing over the course of 2 to 3 months. The above information is not intended as diagnosis or treatment and is offered for educational purposes only. Sincerely, Chris D. Meletis, ND
