Enzymes and Aminos

Dear Dr. Meletis,

Is the action of proteolytic enzymes (Serrapeptase, bromelain, etc.) affected by taking free-form amino acids at the same time?

Mr. D.

Dear Mr. D.,

Ideally, proteolytic enzymes are taken on a totally empty stomach by at least 30 to 60 minutes. Definitely one would not want to take them with a “protein rich” meal or with any protein, as their utility would be wasted on breaking down the protein. Hence, likely the genesis of your question. Yet, a small amount of free amino acids should not be an undue burden to the enzymes. I imagine you face the same challenge as so many people relative to when to take all your supplements, so taking them at the same time and monitoring the outcomes relative to symptoms, blood thinness or inflammatory markers or other reasons for use will allow you to know how your body tolerates the combination.

The information shared here is educational and is not intended as either diagnosis or treatment. Working with one’s personal health care provider is always important.

Sincerely,

Chris D. Meletis, ND
