Dear Dr. Dean At a recent medical meeting I heard you mention the name of a dietary supplement that will reduce lipofuscin or aging spots. Unfortunately I didnt write down the name of the supplement.Thanks.JD

Dear JDThe supplement I was talking about was probably Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) in doses of 400-500 mg daily. Lipofuscin is the aging pigment that causes aging spots or liver spots on the backs of peoples hands. Lipofuscin also accumulates in the heart and brain as we age. I have found that regular consumption of DMAE will cause these spots to dramatically lighten or disappear altogether in six months to one year (remember the spots didnt appear overnight).Other supplements that may help prevent the formation or hasten the resolution of aging spots include Vitamin E (400-800 mg per day) and L-carnitine (or acetyl L-carnitine) (1500 mg per day). Also the prescription drugs Hydergine (3-5 mg/day) Piracetam (Nootropil) (2400-3600 mg per day) or centrophenoxine (500 mg/day) have all shown to have lipofuscin-inhibiting and removing effects. All of these drugs are discussed in my book Smart Drugs & Nutrients (available from VRP). The drugs are available from IAS without a prescription.Ward Dean M.D.
