Dear Dr. Meletis,

My husband (69 years old) has had a stroke and double bypass surgery. He did not have a heart attack; the blockage was found before it did any damage. Now the doctor said his heart is fine, but they have him taking one baby aspirin per day. In looking at your supplements, he is interested in taking Nattokinase+; however, the product caution says not to take it if you take blood thinning medication. Is one baby aspirin per day reason not to take Nattokinase+? He does not take Coumadin®, etc., but he is very sensitive to medication. Even the baby aspirin causes him to bruise easily, which means the aspirin thins out his blood—not to the extent Coumadin would.

Mrs. T.

Dear Mrs. T.,

Your husband apparently is very sensitive if a baby aspirin causes bruising. You may have his doctor check his PT/PTT, which is his bleeding time. My patients look to stay very thin relative to the PT/PTT scores, but not so thin as to cause excess risk of bleeding. In regards to Nattokinase, generally my patients can often add a baby aspirin and Nattokinase, yet it all comes to personal tolerance and your husband seems to be running thin already, so caution must be used. Checking with your husband’s doctor prior to supplementing would be very prudent.
