Dear Dr. Meletis,
I just switched from atenolol to Bystolic®, as I was not tolerating the Atenolol well. My question is can I take Nattokinase or Turmeric with the Bystolic. Will there be any adverse effects? Thank you.
Ms. T.
Dear Ms. T.,
Thank you for your question. Both Nattokinase and Turmeric have a blood-thinning property. So, generally if your personal physician is fine with you being on a natural blood thinner while on this medication, it could be fine. My patients often will check their fibrinogen levels and PT/PTT levels prior to and after starting one or both of these supplements to ensure that a good therapeutic level is being taken: Literally a before and after view of the effects of the supplements on blood thinness and some risk factors for clots.
The information shared here is educational and is not intended as either diagnosis or treatment. Working closely with your physician is always essential.
Sincerely,
Chris D. Meletis, ND
