Dear Dr. Meletis, I have recently taken a blood glucose test, which came back at 188. I know this is much too high. I have already ordered Optimum D and GluControl™, to help reduce this number, as you recommended for someone else. My question is, I have been taking Arginine/Ornithine capsules (10 at bedtime) for a while, and this past month I located a box of Symbiotropin® that I’d bought, so I’ve been taking that instead of the Arginine/Ornithine. Is it a problem for me to take either of these, and could they have resulted in a high blood glucose level? Ms. B.
Dear Ms. B., Working closely with your personal health care provider is obviously very important. Your choices of Optimum D and GluControl are good choices. Avoidance of carbs will be critical, since your pancreas is not able to keep up long term with increased insulin production secondary to the insulin resistance. It is important to get a fasting insulin level and a HA1c. Many of my patients find the use of fiber, such as Fiber-Rite, a great tool, typically 6 to 8 capsules. I have not seen Arginine/Ornithine or Symbiotropin cause any negative effects on blood sugar levels. Vitamin D3 is also important to support blood sugar levels.
