Dear Dr. Meletis,
May I take free form amino acids such as L-Arginine together with proteolytic enzymes such an Bromelain and Serrapeptase? I would like to take both together at bedtime.
Mr. D.
Dear Mr. D.,
Thank you for your question. Many of my patients take their amino acids either first thing in the AM or prior to bed, so that they can be taken away from protein-containing foods. Likewise, when using proteolytic enzymes such as Bromelain and Serrapeptase, these are routinely taken away from “complex protein foods.” Thus, taking free form amino acids, Arginine and enzymes makes sense overall. The one key thing is to make sure that the Arginine, which is a vasodilator-supportive amino acid, does not increase blood flow relative to your body that it ends up making you more alert and hence affect your sleep. Also since proteolytic enzymes can affect some people with stomach conditions, making sure that you tolerate them well at bedtime is important. I advise my patients with acid reflux/GERD not to take enzymes at bedtime.
