Dear Dr. Meletis,
My 11-year old son has an IgE level of 7600. He has very bad asthma and is on 2 different steroid inhalers for maintenance/prevention of symptoms. He cannot skip a dose or he feels the symptoms. He also has many allergies, both food and environmental. What would you suggest that might be able to decrease his symptoms and possibly bring his levels down over time and also boost his immune system? Because he is a child, I am always wary of giving him too much of something. Thank you for your advice in this matter.
Ms. G.

Dear Ms. G.,
Sorry to hear about the level of suffering that your son is experiencing. As you likely know there are two primary aspects of asthma: inflammation and spasm. My patients with asthma often incorporate the following approaches, yet checking with your son’s doctor is essential prior to proceeding with supplements since he is so reactive. My patients use fish oil (assuming not allergic), such as Ethyl EPA. Also Opti-Mag to help address muscular contractility, and I always recommend getting a blood test for Red Blood Cell Magnesium. I would also encourage you to read about EpiCor® Jr. as well, as EpiCor has been investigated for asthma and allergies. Also with a high IgE, the identification and avoidance of other reactive triggers including IgG food sensitivities can prove helpful. VRP offers access to this Food Allergy Testing for consumers, http://www.vrp.com/ProductPage.aspx?ProdID=9840. Also here is a general article of allergic burden, http://www.vrp.com/articles.aspx?ProdID=2309
