Acetyl-l-carnitine is beneficial for:
Are you worried about losing your memory and cognition as you age? Perhaps worried about memory and cognition in someone who drinks too much alcohol? Supplementing with acetyl-l-carnitine has been shown to diminish memory loss and cognitive impairment associated with aging and it appears to help alcoholics, too. Acetyl-l-carnitine, often called ALC, has been shown to preserve brain health. It promotes healthy brain functioning and provides oxidative support, thereby reducing oxidative damage. It also supports healthy nerve function throughout the body, particularly associated with poor blood sugar control and/or induced by medications. Taking acetyl-l-carnitine early, for example before or in the beginning of cognitive or nerve concerns, is most effective.
Just for men: ALC (and l-carnitine) exist in sperm, and low ALC levels have been linked to infertility. Taking ALC helps reduce loss of testosterone associated with aging, too.
If you are managing chronically low thyroid issues with your practitioner, talk with them before taking ALC. Individuals vary and it’s beneficial for some with thyroid issues.
ALC has a good safety profile, and it’s been used in dozens of research trials for over 20 years. ALC is similar but different from l-carnitine. Evidence suggests that ALC is more effective for brain and nerve health*.
